[Bucky he has no words for how relieved he is for you giving him something to focus on apart from shivering.]
Where is it? And can you describe the texture and look of your skin where it is? Might be frostnip, which is the first stage of frostbite. Easier to deal with and you're less likely to lose tissue.
[Bucky... why did you not tell him about this sooner? John takes a breath.]
Are you anywhere near one of the houses that has hot water? Can you get to one of them in a day or so? I know down at the entrance the aquarium has hot water all the time in the sink. That's definitely frostbite. I don't want to scare you, Jay, but it sounds like you're at the point of needing partial amputations. We want to salvage as much tissue as possible, though, and that means rewarming your arm where it's connected to the metal. Trying to rewarm only to have it freeze again would cause worse damage, though. And you'll need treatment over a few days to keep as much of your arm as possible.
[If they were doing this right and in a hospital, he'd have Bucky in for at least a month, but they don't have that kind of time.]
Thawing can take up to an hour for something that serious, and the clinic only has hot water for 10 minutes a day. It's gonna hurt like hell when we rewarm it, too, so you'll need pain medication.
[He's not panicked about the idea of painful procedures, he's been through worse for many years, though he is a little concerned about losing more parts of his arm. He can't risk it not functioning here.
There's no point whining over it, though. What's happened has happened and he needs to face the consequences.]
Hang on.
[There's radio silence for about five minutes before Bucky responds again.]
No hot water here and not near the aquarium. Do I need to find a doctor in person or can I amputate what needs doing myself?
There will be that, yes. But there are things you can do to try to fix this in some small ways, y'know? Don't bother her for a while, just focus on finding a way out of here, getting you both home and her back to Sasha. Deeds speak louder than words, and you helping her accomplish that goal, even if you aren't friends for the moment, is going to mean something.
I dunno her well enough to know if she's the type of woman to give second chances, but just do what you can to be worth that second chance, all right? I know you're trying, but picking fights with people like Estinien? Maybe avoid that. I know he's a completely racist arse, but just shutting him out might be the best way to shut him down.
I think so. At least from what I've understood? All of us have MN in our bodies. Some people have more of it than others. I'm not sure what causes one person to succumb to it more quickly than others apart from having their Beacon off. Apparently, that's meant to help the Admin sort you out... but it attracts anomalies, so there's a trade off.
[At least he knows it is an attempt at humor this time. John purses his lips. He needs to turn this conversation back to Beckett.]
I'll work on it. In the meanwhile, I think I'm meant to give you a talking to? At least an 'I told you so?' What are we going to do about the blood, Beckett?
[Ah... That's, well, it's good to know it caught Kid's eye, he supposes, even if Stein's been insistent about it being normal.]
It's all right, kid. I'm happy to talk about that. Sorry I interrupted your conversation with him, but it wasn't sitting right with me, him calling you a nutter. Ignorance can make people cruel, even when they don't mean to be.
Where d'you want to start?
[Please let him focus on your problems and not his own, Kid.]
[Unfortunately, it might take a bit for the teen to open up despite being the initiator, if the averted gaze is any indication. Stein had called the Lines of Sanzu a mark of the divine, but Kid looks every inch a child now with his shoulders hunched and head bowed, arms crossed over his chest.] I don't--
Mr. Solomons is not the first person. I have had professors, classmates, even my Weapon partners--
I...appreciate your intervention. [Kid's voice hitches, just slightly.] However, I don't doubt it will happen again.
[Well that's a change of subject. Has he hit a nerve? Beckett concedes to filing the question away for later. When John mentions blood he can't suppress a faint swallow.]
"We"? You don't need to do anything. There's nothing you can do. I'm keeping in touch with people in the area to prevent further incidents. It's... getting better, bit by bit.
A doctor would be a much better idea. They'll be able to ensure you retain the most amount of tissue. Until then, I need to to cover those wounds as best you can. Don't do anything tight over them, we don't want the skin chaffing and sloughing off.
Let me check the map.
We're in #29, heading east toward Kesara's Tunnel. Then I'll be looping southwest and heading toward the entrance. I can break off from that and head your way, though.
Think I've heard some of the apartments in the tunnels have hot water if you're closer to that than not.
[All right. He's not looking his best, but this demands a video conversation on his side, too. There's no pity in John's expression when the screen flips on, but there is empathy.]
I'm really sorry you've had to deal with that, Kid. Really, no one should have to. There are a lot of ignorant people in the world, though. You're right. It'll probably happen again. But I can teach you the words to use to shut them down like I did with Mr. Solomons, if you'd like. It shouldn't be your obligation to explain or educate, though. If you don't feel like it, you can send them right to me, and I'll set them straight.
I don't know anything about magic or how normal this is for a person with... spiritual energy, but what I can see is that it's making it hard for you to interact with other people like you might want to. That's something we should fix, and it's not just your side of things. It's all of the rest of them that need work, too.
I mean I can talk to the Admin to see if there's anything specifically that I can request. If she knows you're having real problems, she might be able to bend protocols like she did to get Charlie and Charles my supplies.
[Zach, were you around for the whole 'the world is radioactive and we will all die horribly without the MN in our bodies and proper WiFi reception' part of events? John's glad this is text because Zach can't see the way he's raising a brow judgmentally.]
We're not all dying right at this moment, Zach. Relax. Remember we've got these machines inside us to keep us alive. They've got some nasty side effects, but not everyone gets them, and not everyone has them at the same severity.
Potions and cure spells. Right. I'm not sure the Admin's going to have those, so a regular prescription for this world is probably the best you can hope for right now. Try to hold out, Zell, and if you have any trouble with your medication, you can let me know if you're not comfortable with him.
