[It's not too long after lockdown ends that John receives a message from England. England's enunciation is mostly businesslike, however, there's a mote of nervousness that occasionally touches the middles of his words.]
Good morning. [And then, an interjection of characteristic British dryness:] Or as good of a morning as it can be, considering the circumstances. I understand that you've had a difficult few days.
[An understatement, really. But England is back to seriousness after that.] I wanted to ask how you were doing. I know that we're not well-acquainted, but— well. I hope to hear an encouraging response, regardless.
[Ah, well... okay. This is fine. John's tone is equally dry when he replies at first.]
Well, y'know? Think we've all run into a bit of bother lately. I'm fine. [He is not fine, but it's an encouraging response.] Just heading down to our local hospital to see to a few of the people who were tucked up in there. Not the worst place to get caught.
How are you doing? Are you with anyone? Focus on getting rehydrated. You'll probably want to move, as well. Dunno when that cabin fever business sets in properly, but it can't be too far off.
[You want to fuss at him, England? Please enjoy some fussing back. It helps to keep the focus off of him.]
[Okay that is not how this is supposed to work. His citizens are not supposed to worry too much about him. He's not the squishy mortal, here.
Except in Norfinbury he is, but, you know.
England humours the line of questioning for now.] I'm with America and Ginger. We're all understandably a bit fatigued, but we'll be fine. I've had worse on the battlefield.
[A lot worse. So clearly that makes this situation perfectly all right.
His tone is a little imploring as he continues.] I hope you're taking your own advice. [For your deflection, John, have a counter-deflection.]
'Course. I haven't been suffering radiation sickness, though. Think the lot of us down below made it out better on that score than you.
[And now back at you, England.]
Anyway, it's been a while since the last real war on home soil, lads in the trenches... unless you... fight in every conflict. [There's some mild hesitance. He's not sure if he wants to ask if England's been fighting over in Afghanistan or Iraq in his version of the world. He's still not wholly convinced England is the personification of his country, but he'll humor him for the moment.]
