[ Despite Royce's encouragement and John's patience and K having had several months already to mentally work himself up to it, now that he's here and it's actually happening — or would be happening, if his voice hadn't deserted him — he's finding it extremely difficult to take the next step. The fatigue he's feeling more heavily by the minute and the stress of the day aren't helping matters.
This results in him giving John a blank look, almost as though he's waiting for something.
A look his handler would recognise; it usually meant she needed to clarify her orders. ]
[Royce's encouragement seems rather quiet and tentative, so John decides to add a little more weight to it. He does his best Captain talking to a recruit tone, looking K square in the eye.]
I'd like you to tell me what you need, son. Now, please.
[ And just like that: ] —Headaches. I have chronic headaches. [ K answers without hesitation now but seems mildly confused even as he does. Perturbed, even, by what just occurred. Only his recognised handler or superior officers should be able to trigger this compulsion to obey. ] When Zephyr brought me here, I was still healing from a fractured skull. But the headaches started even before that, so I didn't think they were related.
Then our memories were manifesting in the rain, and I saw my handler again... a memory of her. But real enough that I had to obey her. [ A glance toward Royce here, because aside from Connor, he knows the most about K's history and the awkward android problems. ] The headaches — stopped. For a while at least. [ So, too, is the throbbing pain in his temples rapidly dissolving right now, and he regards John with a curious frown. ]
I think you've just confirmed why.
[ Congratulations, John, you've solved the mystery without even meaning to. ]

Go on. Ask. [ He murmurs. If Royce knew exactly what it was K was wanting to ask, he'd do it for him, but he doesn't want to mess it up. ]
