We solve crimes, I blog about it and he forgets his pants. I wouldn’t hold out too much hope.

General Notes About Movements

These are questions that I had about movements (or didn't realize about movements) and have picked up the answers to over time.
  • You can move DIAGONALLY on the map in one movement. It's not just up-down and side-to-side. You can zigzag across the map if you want.
  • When transitioning between two zones with different movement allowances, you will have the allowance for the zone that you are ENTERING. Let's say I'm going from Residential Zone 2 (6 squares of movement) to the Split Tunnels (4 squares of movement). I might only have traveled two squares to get from Res Zone 2 to the Split Tunnels, but that doesn't mean I have 4 squares of movement left. I take the Split Tunnels' allowance, meaning I only have 2 squares of movement left when I enter into the Split Tunnels. It works the other way, as well. You might increase your movement allowance while moving between zones.
  • You get a FREE thorough search for any building you stay in overnight. No need to allocate movement allowance for that.
  • There is NO EXTRA MOVEMENT COST for traveling across rubble areas (scattered brown bits on the map).
  • You can move through large buildings that cover multiple squares in ONE MOVEMENT SQUARE
  • You can move across skybridges in the Industrial Zone and between Hubs in the Maintenance Tunnels in ONE MOVEMENT SQUARE. The ONE EXCEPTION is the mess of tunnels between Hub 3 and Hub 4. That requires FOUR MOVEMENT SQUARES
  • If you are traveling through the Split Tunnels, SPECIFY if your character is moving carefully/using a light/using equipment to assist. This will reduce the chance of injury, which is possible with movement in this area.
  • If you have (makeshift) snow shoes, it CUTS MOVEMENT COST IN HALF OVER SNOW-ONLY SQUARES. Specify removal of these over rubble-filled squares as they doubles movement costs if left on.

The Movement Plan

This is how the below example that we're going to go through looks in terms of the standard Movement Form:

Character Movements
Starting Location: BBC29 - 324
Travel:
AAB28 (1 square)
ZZ27 - 316 > (tunnels) (1 square)
(tunnels) EEF27 (1 square)
(tunnels) HHI20 > GGH20 (1 square)
(tunnels) DDE22 - 303 (1 square)
Ending Location: DDE22 - 303
Notes: House is traveling alone. 5 squares of movement have been used.

Step 1 - Pull up your tabs

For movements, I typically bring up at least three tabs.
  • Character Movements - Gives you your max allowance of squares by area for any given span of days.
  • Big Above-Ground Map - I do this for ease when I'm moving between areas, rather than using smaller maps.
  • Big Below-Ground Map - You will need this when you're moving through the maintenance tunnels. This is the only way to enter/exit Residential Zone 3, as well as certain buildings. More on that later!

Step 2 - Figure out where you're starting and where you're ending

Let's start with a simple example. House is in Residential Zone 3 - Building 324. I want to move him to Radiation Zone - Building 303 for some Sweet Loot.

I check the Character Movements tab. This tells me that it's 6 Squares Maximum Movement in the Residential Zone on Day 288.

In cases where you're doing a different movement pattern, consider the Big Above-Ground Map to figure out where you're starting and where you're going.

Step 3 - Get to a building that has access to the Maintenance Tunnels

The buildings that have Maintenance Tunnel access can be found in the Setting Descriptions. BUT FOR EASE, just look at THIS. Every building that has (or had) Maintenance Tunnel access is outlined in a thick red line. Or for list form, the following buildings have access:
  • Building 2 - Also Sparrow Langley's house (a known NPC)
  • Building 12
  • Building 56
  • Building 122
  • Building 139
  • Building 273 - Only part of this building is accessible. You cannot EXIT this building if you enter it through the Maintenance Tunnels. The description of what is in this side of the building is located HERE.
  • Building 279 - This building no longer 'exists.' If characters travel down the tunnel to this building, they'll get turned back around and just wind up back at Hub 4.
  • Building 303
  • Building 309 - This is a building you MUST pass through to access the new area.
  • Building 316 - This is the building you will COME UP IN or EXIT THROUGH to enter/exit the Residential Zone 3 or to reach the HIGH SCHOOL (Building 326).
  • Building 326 - This building is the HIGH SCHOOL.
In our example, we're EXITING Residential Zone 3, so House uses two squares of movement to get to Building 316.

Step 4 - Move through the Maintenance Tunnels

For the Maintenance Tunnels, you spend movements going from one building to another or one hub to another. It DOES NOT cost extra movement to move around WITHIN a hub that you enter. Hub 5 takes up 4 squares and I can move between those freely. In any case, House has made it over to Building 303, where he was going.

You'll typically consult your Big Below-Ground Map here for different movement patterns.

Step 5 - Calculate how many squares of movement you have remaining for things like searches

I can't actually reach any other buildings in the Radiation Zone from Building 303 with only two squares of movement, so I can apply those to searches of other places I've passed through, instead. I could have House do a thorough search at Building 309, for instance before moving on. You can check the Basic Item Availability page to check if there's something you want in a particular building. Remember for that to post in the appropriate building on the Basic Item Availability page for what your character is taking. You don't need to put item grabs into your movements or your Search Requests.
